Director of Hockey mid-season report

As we begin the second half of our season, I would like to wish a Happy New Year to all of our members, and I thought I would take this opportunity to bring you up to speed with some of the club development work that has been taking place. The development noted below has been above and beyond the continued day-to-day running of the club, the hard work, determination and effort of our loyal volunteers, and the playing success upon the pitch. I hope that you are able to take five minutes out of a busy day, grab yourself a cup of tea and learn more about your hockey club. If you would like to learn more or have any thoughts or comments about your club, please get in touch with me or one of the committee members. Jon Rye Director of Hockey #*Club Documentation# – The following documents have been created or updated: Holcombe Hockey Club Development Strategy 2008-2013, Child Protection Policy, Equity Policy, Club Disciplinary Code, Developmental Selection Policy, Organisational Structure 08-09 and the roles and responsibilities of: Coaches, captains, club officials and volunteers, parents, Director of Hockey, Junior Co-ordinator, Head Coach, and the Club Welfare Officer. These documents are required to ensure that our systems and procedures are documented as well as supporting our application for the ClubsFirst accreditation from England Hockey. #*Club Welfare Officer# – We are in the process of recruiting a volunteer Club Welfare Officer. This role is to be the first point of contact for volunteers, coaches, parents and young people where concerns about welfare, poor practice or child abuse are identified. The club welfare officer will also implement the club’s procedures and promote best practice. As soon as recruitment process has been completed, I will ensure further details are displayed on the website and inside the clubhouse. #*Coaching plans# – Coaching plans have been developed for our junior section. The Under 10 plan is based upon the recently produced England Hockey resource Quicksticks, and the plan for the 10 – 16yr olds has been developed with the support of experienced county coaches and our coaches within the club. #*Coaching course# – We have been able to secure two places on a forthcoming level one coaching course and Dave Sancto and Nathan Ogden will be in attendance. This will allow the club to continue the development of the coaching provision for the junior section and provide high quality opportunities for our young people. #*Elite athlete support# - Due to their success in gaining a place playing for Kent, Project 2016 will be offered to Matthew and Jonathan Baker, and the Athlete Development Programme to Chris Link and Chris Major. The Medway 2012 Team has accepted our junior members as participants of both programmes and will offer financial assistance to help with equipment and competition costs, advice from the UK’s top athletes and scientists at the University of Kent at Medway, and free off-peak access to Medway’s sports facilities. #*First Aid provision# – As part of our drive to develop the club, over 20 members will be attending a 4 hour First Aid course during January to ensure that we have sufficient first aid provision for our playing opportunities. #*London 2012 pre-games training camps# – Work continues with the Medway 2012 team to promote Holcombe Park as a venue for the London 2012 pre-games training camps. Medway 2012 has produced a promotional brochure and DVD which will be sent to all National Olympic Committees. This will serve as an introduction to using Medway facilities as a venue to train before the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. #*Marketing and Promotion# – A new set of promotional posters have been printed for the club, one for the adult section and one for the junior section. These have been sent to all schools, colleges and universities within the area as well as to other partners. If you would like a pdf version to print and display at work please let me know. #*School to Club links# – The club has continued to develop links with schools around the Medway area. Chatham Grammar School for Boys and Thomas Aveling School have continued to receive coaching for their senior sides in the Under 18 schools league, with Adam Cook and Adnan Zakir taking the lead in this. With the Greenacre School Sport Partnership and the Howard School Sport Partnership, the club has employed a School Sport Coach. Each term for six weeks, Adam Cook has been coaching year 4 and 5 pupils in a variety of primary schools. So far we have been into four primary schools and delivered coaching to over 60 young people. By the end of this academic year, we hope to have coached to over 190 pupils within 12 schools. By coaching these young people, marketing to the club to parents, carers and teachers we hope to forge new links and strengthen not only the junior section but the club as a whole. #*Umpires# – After the successful summer development programme led by Jim Lockhart, eight umpires attended a level one umpiring course hosted at Holcombe in October. We hope that these umpires will be able to support the club in the future and enable Harry Kemble to increase his umpiring workforce! #*Website# – The website has been kept updated by Andy Parry and Richard Russell and will hopefully undergo another change in the next few weeks. A new junior section of the website will be going live and will be user-friendly for our junior members. The development of this area has been supported by some of our junior members, and we will be one of the first hockey clubs in the country to have a junior section specifically for juniors. It sounds strange but most junior sections are written by adults for adults!
