Want to gain an umpiring qualification?

Have you ever wondered why that whistle keeps blowing? Ever thought you could do better than the guy with the whistle? Want to give it a try? Think it’s time to hang up the hockey stick? Not an active sports player but want to support your partner/children? Pick up a whistle! The club is always looking to promote all aspects of the game of hockey and keenly supports willing volunteers who are prepared to take charge of the line. Here's your chance to emulate the great Pierluigi Colina. The club has an overall requirement to provide umpires to at least 18 fixtures each week; the Ladies must have 5 qualified (and registered) umpires each week to officiate at their league fixtures; in addition there are 13 men's teams all requiring an umpire. Qualifying is a relatively straightforward process. There is an initial theory section, comprising 2x 3hour sessions to review the rules, umpire etiquette etc. These are run by a representative of the Kent Hockey Umpires Association Umpire Development team - don't worry, they're only human like the rest of us! There is a short multiple choice rules test to complete at the end of the second session. These sessions will normally be held at the clubhouse. The next step, following completion of the ‘theory’, is to umpire 3 matches and obtain the signatures of both captains from each game. The intention is that the fledgling umpire will be supported by one of the club’s senior umpires – if they should wish. Having collected the necessary signatures, the final stage is to be ‘watched’ by a KHUA representative whilst umpiring a match. If you perform to an adequate level - which of course you are bound to! – your Level One grading is achieved. There is a (not insubstantial) administration fee for each participant, however, Holcombe HC will pay the fee for all serious applicants. There is a course due to run on 21st and 28th June 2006 (Wednesdays – no England World Cup matches!). If you would like to join these sessions, please contact me by email #^mailto:Viv_Rudd_3@hotmail.com,Viv Rudd# or phone 01795 843090. If you’re not sure about taking the formal route at first, why not test yourself out by umpiring a friendly game – contact me as detailed above. #^mailto:Viv_Rudd_3@hotmail.com,Viv Rudd#
