Coram Beanstalk Reading Helper

Coram Beanstalk reading helpers help struggling children to reach their true potential by providing one-to-one reading support. Together helpers and children read, talk and make books fun to help transform the child's reading ability and confidence.

There are a number of opportunities within the Medway (and Kent) area... in essence, a number of children in the Medway area who really need the support of Coram Beanstalk reading helpers.

Do you have the time, or could you make the time during your week to provide one-to-one literacy support in a primary school to a child who has fallen behind with their reading? Could you transform the life of a child and transform them into a confident, passionate and able reader? Do you have any friends or family members who  might be keen and available to support?

With Coram Beanstalk's Reading 321 you'll help three children, twice a week, for at least one academic year (three terms, starting at any time of the year). With your support, you'll help them improve their reading ability, confidence and learn to love reading.

You'll make a lasting difference:

  • You'll read, play and talk to open up a child’s imagination and help them discover the magic of reading
  • You'll help three children succeed at school
  • You'll become part of your local community and give something back

What's involved:

  • You'll engage with children in a fun and positive way
  • You'll adapt each session to the child, seeing for yourself how they progress
  • You'll volunteer for 90 minutes, twice a week, in a school near you for 30 weeks - during school hours on separate days so you'll need to be able to spare a couple of mornings or afternoons a week for that length of time. It's the consistency and regularity of our support that makes all the difference!
  • In some areas we may be able to offer a once a week volunteering opportunity, where you ‘buddy up’ with another volunteer who goes in on another day. If this might be of interest, please let us know.

If you volunteer through Holcombe HC's partnership with the Coram Beanstalk charity, we will provide you with two Holcombe HC Tee / Polo Shirts to wear during your reading support sessions.  Going forward, Holcombe Park may host Coram Beanstalk's training sessions for new and experienced reading helpers and regional conferences.

Initial training will set you up to make a strong start with the children in school using the knowledge and skills you already have. When you have started as a reading helper, further training is provided that helps you to develop and enhance your support for the children. You'll get invited to regional conferences and get access to MyCoramBeanstalk, the online volunteer portal that includes links to lots of useful resources and guidance.

If interested, please get in touch and take a look at the Coram Beanstalk website.
