Match Report:
On a dark afternoon, Holcombe 3’s travelled ‘into Town’ for a showdown with Blackheath. With Captain Jon Rye missing, it was left to Deputy Gaz Wellings to step in once again to lead the boys on the back of 5 straight victories. Consulting the fixture before Christmas, Holcombe beat Blackheath 2-1 at home, but were lucky to do so and knew that the home side wanted revenge for what was, for them, an injustice.

Sedgehill’s school astro was very sandy and played into Blackheath’s hands as they took a well deserved lead of 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. This shook Holcombe, but did not break them as they pushed on in search of some goals. With Wellings, Sukh Sandhur, Jon Baker and Richard Hurst determined to stop the rot, Caulfield, Mirza and Grunwell provided the front boys with some opportunities to penetrate the opposition’s goal. It wasn’t long before Andy Cromb terrorised their defence with sublime skills and won short corners galore. Up stepped Hurst to drag flick 3 quick goals that gave Holcombe belief that this was a game for the taking. This rattled Blackheath, who had a very impressive attacking forward line, but unfortunately they couldn’t hide their frustration and eventually talked themselves into a couple of yellow cards.

Turning round 3-2 up at half time, Wellings knew that the next goal would prove crucial. With amazing skill from Zerafa, magic from Cromb, wisdom from Garbett and reverse stick shooting from Harvey, Blackheath were reduced to mere spectators as Holcombe camped in their D and scored another 5 goals to put the points in the bag. A well worked attack from the opposition saw them win a flick, and although Pring went the right way, it was too good to prevent them gaining some belief and salvage some pride, but the last smile went to Holcs through a mazy run and reverse shot from Zerafa.

Holcombe 3’s entertain Ashford next week, who destroyed the 3’s 8-1 before Christmas. This will be a measure of how far Holcombe have come.
