Match Report: With the rare luxury of having thirteen players to call on, Holcs started the first half strongly, with Vir Panesar, Jo Collis, Malcolm Earl and Yash Rampersand controlling the midfield and causing many problems for the opposition. After a while Maidstone started to find their rhythm and put a man on Vir to try to stifle him as Holcs playmaker. The action moved from end to end, with both teams creating several chances to score; eventually Holcs were able to convert one of their chances, with Vir Panesar scoring from a short corner routine. Maidstone came back hard and put the visitors under severe pressure with Kev Smith, Sean McCarthy, Paul Banbury and Paul Burd keeping the hosts at bay, although Dane Ramsden in goal had to make several stunning saves to keep Maidstone out. As half time approached Holcs were able to regain the initiative and double their lead, scoring again through Vir Panesar to make it 2-0 at half time. In the second half both sides had become more accustomed to the small pitch and started to play tighter hockey, but Holcs began to dominate and were able to extend their lead with additional goals from Liam Banbury from very short range, George Hobden and finally a powerful strike by Paul Burd from the edge of the ‘D’, which made it 5-0 to Holcs. It is also worth mentioning the contribution of Marco Arkesteijn, playing his first game of hockey, who came on and performed well as a rolling sub in both halves. |
