Match Report:
Holcombe IVs could have been mistaken to be looking for a night on the town when they headed for London, they were, however, travelling to an early evening fixture against one of the form teams of the league. Despite pre-match optimism following a number of good team performances, Holcombe were caught flat footed after 44 seconds when KCOG cracked a bouncing ball into the corner of the goal. This probably should have spelled disaster for the visitors but they showed their mettle by taking the upperhand for the next 20 minutes. Although KCOG had two good breakaways, Holcombe had more than their share of the first half but were unable to make any impact in front of goal. Meanwhile a family affair in defence saw Val, Fran and Helen Guard and Jane Daragon holding out against the College Girls. Player of the match keeper Charlea Phipps had a great kicking game. Optimism was high for the second half but Holcs fell foul again when they failed to close down a KCOG forward move, which inevitably resulted in a second goal within 5 minutes. Once again, this galvanised Holcs - tireless running and strong tackling from Helen Guard, good midfield play from Allie Brooks, Viv Rudd, Mandy Snell, Maegan Fawcett and Vicky Caulfield - produced an even second half with plenty of action at both ends. Sue Alexander and Amy Shardlow worked hard up front, but despite 10 minutes of sustained pressure at the end of the half, keeping KCOG pinned inside their 25 line, Holcs were unable to grab the goal that would have been their just reward for an excellent team performance.
